Dedham, MA - Massachusetts District 8 congressional candidate Brianna Wu today released a statement on the growing number of state anti-abortion bans around the country, including the Missouri bill banning abortion after 8 weeks.
"It’s increasingly clear that these draconian abortion bans that are passing at the state level are a coordinated attack on women’s rights by the GOP. This is intentional, and if Republicans get their way, abortion will be outlawed nationally. These bills are designed specifically to challenge Roe v. Wade, which the GOP believes the Supreme Court will overturn thanks to Brett Kavanaugh, whose contempt for women has been clear from the beginning. And after abortion, they’ll go after contraception. They fundamentally want to disenfranchise women by robbing us of our ability to manage our own reproductive health," said Wu.
Wu stated that not only do Republicans need to be held accountable, but so do Democrats who are either silent or are personal opponents of a woman's right to choose, such as her primary opponent, incumbent Stephen Lynch.
"Any Democrat who isn’t fighting this vocally and aggressively is enabling it. My opponent Stephen Lynch ran as an anti-abortion candidate, despite being a 'Democrat.' He tried to ban abortions after 24 weeks. He said he didn’t think women on military bases should be allowed access to abortions. He says he’s “moderated” on abortion, but what does that mean? Either you believe in a woman’s right to choose or you don’t," said Wu.
